Something I had to “like”

I have a beautiful cousin who has recently battled breast cancer.

So when she posted this on Facebook–

I just used my boobs to get out of a ticket

I was pretty sure she had fallen prey to a game. But I thought, how do I not like this post?!

Either she has the sleekest, strongest sense of humor ever–able to reference the tough, painful, effacing road she has just travelled by poking fun at a reality that was never fun, or she has managed to wrangle herself out of a ticket as a double mastectomy survivor.

One way or other, she got my like.

This is me, posting on my wall, in honor of her–

I have never managed to do what you have done. Nope. Always got the tickets. Boobs never helped.

You are one of my heroes.

Dear Mr. Educational Opportunity

Elea Lee's avataretiology

First and foremost–thanks!!

I have been concerned about rising education costs and when Wendy Davis said

Every Texan deserves the educational opportunities I had.

I thought, amen sistah!

Well all I had to do was look up her bio and I figured out she was talking about you.

I am not sure about Ms. Davis, but man, you are the real deal–you took out loans, cashed in retirement money, did a lot of schlepping, and some old-fashioned parenting. All so she could go to Harvard!

She is right, every Texan could use a you.

And I am glad she has put you out there as a resource. Only…only…

Well, I have a few questions about the education you got for her.

For instance vocabulary.

Today Ms. Davis said “innuendo” when she talked about some of the discrepancies in her bio. I am pretty sure she meant to say “truth,”…

Wherefore Art Thou Wendy Davis?

After reading the usual raft of data on Ms. Davis’ confusion on the details of her own life story I went to the great oracle: Wikipedia.

An interesting read.

Back when she was fighting tooth-and-designer-trainers for Texas gals’ rights to terminate late-term babies Ms. Davis grabbed the podium with this narrative:

single mom
Shoe-string Harvard grad
Teen divorcee.

Turns out none of that is true.

She divorced her first husband when she was 21.

Her second husband funded her education and went into debt to send her to school.

He also picked up the slack on caring for the kids.

So much so that when they divorced he got full custody and she paid child support.

Wendy Davis–bringing new meaning to that old Texas assessment:

All hat, no cattle

…but those running shoes are spiffy.

Please, Wendy, do Texas a favor and run somewhere else.

The 10,000 Hour Rule

Elea Lee's avatarflowers in their hair

I am sitting on the dock at the cable lake discussing my middle-aged woman philosophy of wakeboarding with the cable operator, an erudite young fella.

I told him that I figured whatever my limitations (prodigious), I had to commit to practicing.

He told me about the 10,000 hour rule.

K. Anders Ericsson and then Malcolm Gladwell (in his wake) have put forth the notion that if you spend 10 thousand hours doing something you will master it.

I don’t think I will ever master wakeboarding, but I figure I will be better after 10,000 hours!

10,000 hours is about 3 hours a day for a year or an hour a day for three years.

What we do with our time matters.

What beautiful things would you like to master? Don’t wait. Start today.

When the foundations

Psalm 11:2-4 (NIV)
For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart. [3] When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do ?” [4] The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes examine them.

Do you believe?

In foundations
In holy
In arrows shot through
shadows in the dark
Do you believe in
A God who sees?

Lucky, the Lonely Elephant

Thanks to my young zoology enthusiasts I have become a denizen of the San Antonio zoo. As such I am deeply concerned about Lucky, the lonely female elephant.

Yes, there is a petition.

But, here’s the thing. The SA zoo peeps say she is happy alone. She does not look happy alone.

She looks lonely, sad, and bored. I wanted to bust her outta there!!!

I do think she would be happier in a sanctuary or more progressive zoo. But barring that I am open to crowd-sourcing.

What would you tell the SA zoo to do to help Lucky?

Tell me.

Tell them.

Make some noise for Lucky. She deserves to live in community…and that takes more than luck.

Public Executions in North Korea

The news is grim.

In North Korea it is a capital offense to watch movies or own a Bible.

Recently I have read several articles about genocides in Africa, the lingering tragedy of the holocaust, and the absolute scourge of human trafficking. This world is full of human cruelty, and no country on the planet typifies the extent of this darkness more than North Korea.

What can be done?

Prayer is essential. But make no mistake, prayer is the earnest supplication of authority. We should pray to the King of kings for those whose lives are marked by misery and injustice.

But we should seek justice from lesser authorities as well. Where is our moral voice in this? Why is the world so mute when atrocity is at our doorstep?

Who will speak for those who already reside in hell?

And what cost to our souls if we stay silent?

Of the dark

Elea Lee's avataretiology

I swear to you
I would have slept
Long ago
If it weren’t for violet
Across the sky
Lightning and the occasional
Rumble of thunder

Disturbs her perhaps
Or the child who most
Reminds me I am
Beautiful

Says
I am afraid of the dark
Along with the cold, unnatural glow
Of the words I write
To stave off
The monsters of memory and loss

I do not tell him
What I have told his older siblings

I have read that no one is afraid of the dark/only what lurks therein

What lurks in our nightmares
What if I lost you?

Every beat of my heart
Asks this question–will you let me keep them?
Knowing they are Yours.

You keep them
for me

Approaching the Infinite

My young son poses the greatest math questions–

Is x 15 hundred thousand million billion? Is y 85 hundred 251 thousand 6725 million?

Yes. I know that means I need to work on number sequence with him, but there is a lovely poetry to his big, big numbers that I am not anxious to lose.

He approaches the infinite with gusto.

We, the American tax payers, often seem to have even less of a grasp of the bigness of big numbers. We need to break them down into meaningful units.

A trillion, for instance. Do you know how much a trillion is? A trillion dollars? A trillion stars? If we are ever to regain our fiscal footing we all must face an unimaginable debt. A debt in the trillions. Lots and lots of them.

And how about a billion? A billion people? A billion years? It is easy to pretend to grasp numbers that are beyond our normal comprehension.

And even a few hundred million. Heck, let’s just say 65. Sixty five million is great lottery payout, but a nightmarish loan.

Be careful of the debt you are not rich enough to pay by yourself. Be careful not just about money–here today, gone tomorrow, but the other kinds of debt a human can incur.

Grace or judgment on each note.
